Underpainting
Ever felt intimidated by the blank canvas? Think of underpainting as a remedy to this common problem. Starting with simple shapes or even a wash of color can transform your painting process. From setting the mood (and muting that bright white canvas) to creating a structural roadmap for your painting, for centuries artists have used this technique to guide their final work, enhance spontaneity, and achieve a unified, harmonious final piece.

Do You Have To Varnish?
You just finished a painting and it’s everything you’d hoped for. It couldn’t possibly get any better—could it? 😯 For most of us, varnishing just makes sense. It enhances your painting's appearance and offers long-lasting protection for delicate oil and acrylic paint films. You want something that’s as clear as water to preserve the colors of the painting below. And it should be easily removable in the future, leaving the artwork untouched. As far as the finish, it’s totally up to you. Gloss surfaces tend to saturate dry paint layers and add depth, while matte surfaces give a direct look but can lighten dark values. Nothing in art is one-size-fits-all—just find what suits your style best. Presentation by Morgan from our Merchandising team
Will We Run Out of Pigment?
Can artists’ colors disappear? 😵 The truth is that they can and have. Artists’ paints are colored with pigments finely ground powders extracted from natural resources or synthetically made. And pigments have disappeared for all sorts of reasons over the years. The good news? We’ve had replacements for years. So bottom line, even if your pigment of choice runs out—odds are there will be a great replacement in the ever evolving modern palette. 🎨 Presentation by Becca from our Merchandising Team
Watercolor vs. Gouache
Think gouache is just opaque watercolor? Think again! 🙂 Both are water-soluble, and both are used on paper. But beyond opacity, there are also some key differences in how they’re used. 💧Watercolor’s ethereal stained-glass quality requires that color is applied in thin veils, leaving layers visible. This mean that the source of white (and light ☀️) come from the paper. 🤍 With gouache, white paint is used to achieve tints and highlights—just like with oils and acrylics. Thoughts? Questions? Have a personal favorite? Leave us a comment ⬇️ 👩🏻‍🦱 Presentation by Mazi, who works on the BLICK Merchandising Team! 🎥 Filmed at BLICK Studios in Chicago, Illinois 🤗 Thanks to our vendor partners at @winsorandnewton and @royaltalens for the supporting footage.
Choosing The Right Tape
Stuck on what type of adhesive tape you should use with your art? 🤔 While there are many types available, some can get you into a sticky situation. Common cellophane and masking tapes can permanently bond with paper and leave behind nasty residues. 🚫 ust be aware that some of these “reversible” tapes may still need solvents, heat, or a professional for clean removal. Questions? Thoughts? Just stick them in the comments! 👩‍🎤 Presentation by Bri from our SEO team 🎥 Filmed at BLICK Studios in Chicago, Illinois 🎨 Special thanks to @valeriemckeehan, @artbysablerae, @katyvmeehan, @aalekha_art, @juliemaida.creative, and @bgroww whose artwork we featured here.
