the cover of crayon resist letters 101 ways to teach the alphabet, with a child's hand holding a paintbrush
Find the crayon resist letters {101 Ways to Teach the Alphabet} - Gift of Curiosity
Find the crayon resist letters: In this activity, an adult writes letters on a sheet of paper using a white crayon, making them invisible. Kids then find the hidden letters by brushing the paper with watercolor paints, revealing the hidden letters that resist the paint. I love this way of bringing some "magic" to learning the alphabet! #letters #preschool #kindergarten #101WaysToTeachTheAlphabet || Gift of Curiosity
These are our favorite teaching texts for our how-to writing unit. "Walk On!" by Marla Frazee has been a go-to mentor text for years (so cute!), but this new-ish title by Nicola Winstanley just made its way into our bag of tricks... "How to Give Your Cat a Bath in Five Easy Steps." It's perfect for modeling writing moves like logical order, transitions, and revising, but it's also funny, especially if you've ever tried to give a cat a bath. Before you finalize your plans, come take a look! Sofia Valdez is a kid, but that hasn't stopped her from already becoming a leader! Courageous leadership isn't reserved for adults only. Stories, like this one by Andrea Beaty, show children that they, too, have the power to be problem solvers in big ways... ways that can have a lasting impact on a community. If you're working on issues like teamwork, equality, activism, or environmentalism, check out the book. It's a great way to show children how planning and perseverance pay off in the end! What would the perfect school look like? Jack, the main character in IF I BUILT A SCHOOL, has plenty of ideas and the kids love them! Imagine your school and Disney's Tomorrowland had a baby. Throw in a waterpark and you're there! 😂 This is one of our favorite read-alouds for the first week back to school. It's clever and creative and is a natural invitation for kids to imagine what kind of school they would design! Looking for some fresh activities for the new school year? See more here... We love these fun activities for Wemberly Worried. Honestly, we love all of Kevin Henkes' relatable characters... Lilly, Owen, Chrysanthemum, Julius, and, of course, Wemberly. Most kids can find themselves in at least one of his picture books, if not more. Making your own worry dolls is a fun way to follow up the read-aloud, but traditional worry dolls are small and a little challenging for tiny hands to make. We love this chunkier version that uses pipe cleaners and pony beads. Check it out! Oh, sweet Chrysanthemum... she loved her name until others started teasing her about how long it is. After that, she thought it was dreadful. This picture book by Kevin Henkes has long been a back to school favorite, but it's also great for developing vocabulary and deepening comprehension skills, especially when studying character traits and motives. The themes are so relatable... the kids love it. Come see how we use this sweet story on the first day of school and at other times of the year. Procedural writing templates are a great way to scaffold young writers toward independence. Helping them realize how and where they are experts is one of the first steps in getting started. These open-ended templates cover more than twelve fun topics kids can relate to, from raking leaves and washing dogs, to brushing teeth and making chocolate milk. Once they've worked through a few supportive templates, they'll be ready to tackle their own how to writing all by themselves! Get more ideas here. Balloons Over Broadway is one of my favorite picture books to read during the Thanksgiving season. It tells the story of Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and how it has evolved over time. There are so many fun activities that can follow the reading of this story, but one of my favorites is challenging kids to design and create festive balloons for our own holiday parade! It's a natural S.T.E.A.M. activity inspired by the text and the result is a show-stopper the kids won't forget! Read more...
