Vintage photo of the penny-farthing bicycle
The most popular bike up until the mid 1880’s was the penny-farthing. The front wheel represents the British penny while the smaller back wheel is the quarter cent farthing. The penny-farthing was also called an “Ordinary”. The large front wheel made the direct pedal drive more efficient but it was very common to fly over the front wheel when the bicycle bumped into anything. Few women attempted to ride the Ordinaries.
