Since 1892
Luis Trenker was born in St. Ulrich in the Grödental valley, South Tyrol, son of a painter and sculptor. It comes as no surprise that he spoke both the South Tyrolean German dialect and Ladin, an ancient Raeto-Romanance dialect, as he grew up in Gröden, a melting pot of cultures. Nowadays, Ladin is only spoken in a few regions in northern Italy.
