I often like to think of painting as if I’m a sculptor. I start with an indistinct block of clay. Then, I work it into something that broadly resembles the subject. Then, I chip away and refine until it’s complete. Portrait Paintings, Dan Scott, Draw And Paint, World Of Art, The Subject, Learn How To Draw, Work It, Learn To Draw, Sculptor

Sargent's A Parisian Beggar Girl is a masterclass in edge work. The hardest edge in the painting appears to be around the subject’s left hand marking the end of her white garment. Her face, on the other hand, is painted with mostly soft edges, leaving her slightly obscured and ambiguous. The edges are just strong enough to get a sense of that dormant look on her face. This suggests her begging hand is more important than her identity.

What You Can Learn from Nicolai Fechin
Nicolai Fechin, Portrait of Varya Adoratskaya, 1914
I spent the first two months of this year working on just one painting, Elora With Christmas Lights. During this time, I shunned most of my day-to-day tasks. I ignored social media. I hardly published any new emails, articles, or videos. I didn’t draw or work on other paintings. I basically locked myself in the studio and tunnel-visioned this one painting. That’s the only way I was able to do it justice. Anything less than deep, focused attention for a significant period of time wouldn’t cut it. Elena Salnikova's Colorful Portraits
Games in the Snow. Today’s featured artist is Elena Salnikova. She paints stunning portraits in oil, usually with the subject outdoors amongst nature. Her still lifes are also impressive. You can see a few of my favorites below. They are colorful and playful, but not so much that they appear cartoonish and overly stylized.
