Awyu Shield-South Coast New Guinea-Loed Van Bussel Collection-New Guinea Art-Oceanic Art
Here is a fine and old Awyu culture shield collected in the early 1951/52 by Thomas Van Embden who was a geologist working for the Dutch New Guinea Petroleum Company starting in 1946. His work took him all over the southern New Guinea coast where he also collected artifacts many of which ended up in the Royal Tropical Institute in Amsterdam and a few in the Metropolitan Museum in New York via Nelson A. Rockefeller. This shield originally comes from Loed Van Bussel, then was purchased by the Berlin collector Frank Reiter in 1990 (no.1021). Notice the old paper label on the reverse and the well-worn handle. The shield dates to the 1940s or earlier, is 54 ¼” (137.6 cm) in height.
