When going down the stairs you need single leg control. You basically are slowing lowering your bodyweight on one leg as you go down each step ⤵️

You need to be comfortable putting almost full bodyweight through one leg with a bent knee 🦵🏽

This exercise can be one way to begin mastering this skill ✅

The weight is 100% optional and I encourage to master WITHOUT weight first. Use railing support if you need to as this movement can also challenge balance ⚠️

5-8 repetitions may be a good place to start on each side.

If this doesn’t feel good right now and causes significant pain- that’s okay! There are many different ways to modify.

Alyssa Kuhn DPT | Osteoarthritis Expert on Instagram: "Done too much and unsure what to do? 😵‍💫

Overdoing certain activities can be fairly easy to do. Sometimes your joint doesn’t notify you until AFTER you’ve done the activity- even though you felt great doing it 🫠

Two of the BEST things you can do:

1️⃣ Gentle movement as shown in this video. Keep the joint moving as best as you can using very simple movements

2️⃣ Learn from it. Much of arthritis and activity is trial and error. What can your joint handle? Was your recent activity level too much?

If you’ve overdone it- it’s OKAY! Usually the pain will be temporary and you’ll be back to your activities in no time. Speed up the process by taking care of your arthritic joints and giving them what they need ✅
