Adorable Birds Nest Fungi in the Oregon Woods

These are cute little Bird's Nest Fungi in the Nidulariaceae family of fungi. The nests contain tiny "eggs" that are really spore sacs called peridioles. Look close to see how the eggs have splashed out of the nest by the action of raindrops. There are many different kinds of these fungi, and I won't try to guess which one this is - but maybe genus Cyathus? (On the way to Twin Lakes, North Umpqua River, Oregon, 29 March 2013)

Kew Gardens on Instagram: "TINY BIRD’S NESTS 👀 👇 This is the common bird’s nest fungus (Crucibulum laeve) which looks like a miniature nest cradling a clutch of eggs. These flattened ‘eggs’ contain spores and when hit by raindrops they spread their spores. You can find this unique fungus in woodlands as well as on wood chippings or bark mulches – just be prepared to look very closely! #BirdsNest #KewGardens #CrucibulumLaeve #FungiFantatic #Fungi #Mushroom #MushroomHunting #FungiHunter"
