I’ve been able to produce huge amounts of tomatoes for about six months of the year here in central Arkansas, zone 7B, using the following system for growing tomatoes. 

I use a double leader system for both my indeterminate heirloom and cherry tomatoes. This means I prune each plant to just two vines. I plant them along the center of the bed, about 18 inches apart, and use a trellising system to support them. each vine is clipped to a compostable string which hangs from a rail or wire above the tomatoes. At the end of the season, the string clips and tomatoes can all be composted. For heirlooms, I allow the vines to grow up to 8 feet, letting the the clusters along the vines ripen by mid-August.
