A common question I get asked on a regular basis. Especially where I’m located, in the North East just outside of Buffalo New York. Our reputation for snow is far and wide. What most consider a ‘pond heater’ doesn’t exactly heat the water in the sense that you would think it does. The pond heater merely keeps a hole in the ice for poisonous gasses to escape, keeping your fish alive during the cold winter months.

New skimmers are several hundred dollars. I couldn't justify spending that on what is basically a plastic box. So I built my own and saved bigtime. I couldn't find a good step-by-step guide on how to make a homemade pond skimmer. So I have built my own version and explained how I did it.
