In the beginning, we only used free weights, and no bracing (late 90’s, early 2000’s). So dumbbells or kettlebells (ipsilateral or contralateral) and barbell. 

Then we realized that stability could be beneficial, so along came the Bulgarian, abducted, braced, b-stance (aka staggered stance & kickstand), and wall variations. 

Then the landmine variation became very popular. Eventually, machines became acceptable, so the smith, Pit Shark, Hammer Strength, and cable variations became more popular. 

Recently kneeling and hip-supported single leg RDLs are gaining momentum.
