I used to have the hardest time teaching students the difference between open and closed syllables. Finally I came up with a lesson that clicked for them and for me. First make sure your students know what a syllable is, have a strong foundation for vowels and consonants, and letter names. I start with a word like cat. I write it big on my white board. Open and closed syllables have helped my students learn how to attack multisyllabic words! So for example in the word “ti-ger”, the “ti-“ is an open syllable and they know the i says the long sound BECAUSE it’s an OPEN syllable. It is SO cool to see my students tackle unknown words using their knowledge of open and closed syllables ❤️
