The use of makeup was first documented as early as the Ancient Egyptian empire. The first eyeliner emerged from the use of kohl; Egyptian women would use it to line around their eyes into an almond shape. Copper, leaf ore, and malachite were used for the use of red and green pigments for eyeshadow and lip pigmentation.

Kohl made the whites of the eyes stand out and acted as a major supply of nitric oxide that in time before antibiotics, prevented eye infections which could lead to cataracts or blindness. The wealthy Egyptians had it made of galena, a dark metallic mineral. The poor - out of soot and animal fats. Powdered gold, pearls, coral or emeralds were sometimes added to give the eyeliner shine or subtle shades. Essential oils for scent and little oil or milk for easy application were added as well.
