A crossbar switch (aka X-bar) is an assembly of individual switches with a set of inputs contacts and a set of outputs contacts. The switches are arranged in a matrix.  The system design was used in AT&T's 1XB crossbar Central Office (C.O.) exchanges, which entered service about 1938.  These crossbar systems were developed by Bell Telephone Labs, and were inspired by Swedish design.
