Florian Gadsby on Instagram: "Throwing a small batch of stepped mugs from 300 grams of high-iron stoneware, these are tests, in a way, to handle and then look at, so that I can choose one of these forms to make in a much greater quantity. Although there’s six here, the last thrown, the piece on the left at the very end, was scrapped as proportionally it was miles off. The others work. There’s a balance between the squared-off lower section and the sloping out walls, I think one easy visual to pick up to tell whether they work or not, (that means whether I like them or not), is restricting the lip to never flare out further than the straight part underneath, instead they need to be more or less inline, give or take a few millimetres. The last one I threw flared out rather a lot and someh

sabina.morin.studio on Instagram: "Want to control your clay better? This exercise I usually give my course participants who want to improve their throwing skills. Sometimes I even sit next to them and mess up their clay for them to fix. After a couple of times, all of the sudden you’re in control and not the clay. The key is to press down the rim with your index finger while going inwards and outwards with your thumbs. So you’re supporting the outside with the thumps while index is compressing. This way you can basically fix any mishaps during your throwing. Especially when you’re throwing on the hump as I was here. Try it! 🤘 . . . . . . . #ceramics #keramik #pottery #potteryart #clay #clayart #stoneware #handmadeceramics #potterylover #potterydesign #loveceramics #claylove #inst

It includes 10 hours of video lessons and my personal feedback to help you master pottery, making it stable and effortless. You can find more details via the link in my bio."

Edmund de Waal on Instagram: "here is Lucie Rie in her first studio in Vienna in the early 1930’s throwing pots. Her working space was pared down, her vessels cogent, undemonstrative. They fitted into modern life. They didn’t need to perform. Her apartment was designed by a young architect friend Ernst Plischke so that everything could be moved. I love her headed notepaper. I love her lucidity. When she escaped to England after the Anschluss in 1938 she sent the cabinets and shelving to London and re-erected them in her new house. She began again. Here she is in 1967 stretching out in the sunshine. There are many photographs of her but this has to be my favourite. This whole post is an excuse to share it."

Sue Ure on Instagram: "My most watched reel of 2024 I was astonished by the success of this reel earlier this year. It was viewed massively more than any other post I'd done, which was fun for me! It does also show a style of work that's been popular in galleries this year too. No idea why now, but that's the way of fashion - always a bit of a mystery - at least to me! I'm pondering what I'm going to start the year off on and what ideas I'd like to explore first... My aim is to have fun doing it, whatever it is! Wishing everyone the best possible 2025 xxx #wheelthrown #sgraffito #potteryreels #bestreel #studioceramics"
Florian Gadsby on Instagram: "I sometimes forget how much of a challenge centring can be, so here’s a few simple tips that might help you process the process. The first, and perhaps most obvious thing is creating the ‘right’ initial shape to actually centre. You need a rounded lump, (ideally with a rounded bottom so it doesn’t trap air when you slam it down), this way your hands flow smoothly over the surface as compared to jittering all over it. Secondly, you can actually centre the mass of clay an incredible amount before water even touching it. I both slap the lump as the wheel spins slowly, or I even drag a firm fist over the surface, flattening it. Lastly, to check that your piece of clay is actually centred, just rest a finger on it. If your finger jumps around and sways from sid
