Bay St, looking northwest from Temperance St - TorontoJourney416.com
Looking northwest up Bay St from Temperance St in Toronto. The archive photo features the 11-storey Temple Building on the left and The Dominion Automobile Co. on the right. Taken shortly after the Great Fire of April 19, 1904, the old image captures people on bicycles, travelling in horse-drawn carriages, walking, and even a single automobile. However, it does not show the fire’s devastation, which occurred 200 m to the south. Old City Hall and its clock tower remain a constant in both photos.
Yonge St & Richmond St, looking northeast - TorontoJourney416.com
Looking northeast toward the corner of Yonge St and Richmond St E in downtown Toronto. The archive photo shows a postal pillar box (mailbox) featuring advertisements for Taylor’s Borax Soap. This vintage image also captures a time when streetcars travelled along Yonge St. Notice the Confederation Life Building at the corner in both photos.
Front St W, looking northeast from York St - TorontoJourney416.com
Looking northeast along Front St W from York St in downtown Toronto. The archive photo features several establishments arranged from left to right, including Herman Hodge (fruit), Canadian Wool Company and the Queen’s Hotel. Today, the Royal York Hotel occupies this stretch of the block. This grand Chateau-style structure was completed in 1929 and is part of a series of hotels initially owned by the Canadian Pacific Railway.
