Montague Workshop - "Ralph Waldo Emerson once asked what we would do if the stars only came out once every thousand years. No one would sleep that night, of course. The world would become religious overnight. We would be ecstatic, delirious, made rapturous by the glory of God. Instead the stars come out every night, and we watch television." -Paul Hawken | Facebook

Montague Workshop - In the period when Hitler and his Nazi Party rose to prominence, Charlie Chaplin and his films were internationally celebrated. On a 1931 trip to Berlin he was mobbed by fans, which greatly annoyed the Nazis. They would go on to publish a book titled "The Jews Are Looking at You" in 1934 describing Chaplin as "a disgusting Jewish acrobat" (although he was not Jewish). Ivor Montagu, a close friend of Chaplin (and perhaps a distant relative of ours?) is said to have given a copy of the book to him and always believed it to be part of the spark inspiring his next film: the brilliant satire, 'The Great Dictator'. This bold film is also Chaplin's first film to fully use sound. He uses it to great effect at the finale when his gentle Jewish barber (having been mistaken for the ruthless dictator Hynkel) takes the stage and delivers an impassioned speech urging all to turn from violence and toward love. The film was wildly successful, but also widely criticized - particularly the end speech. In response Chaplin said: “To me,” Chaplin wrote, “it is the speech that the little barber would have made — even had to make. People have said that he steps out of character. What of it? May I not be excused for ending my comedy on a note that reflects, honestly and realistically the world in which we live, and may I not be excused in pleading for a better world?” In the face of great darkness, he used lightness. At a time when not everyone was even aware of all the atrocities happening at the hands of the Nazis, he joyfully rebelled and knew that sometimes the most evil of monsters need only be mocked and laughed at. Apologies for the long post, but this film continues to be a favorite. In times of feeling tired or uncertain as news reports roll in, I often return to this speech. (I'll put a link in the comments.) As he says in it: "You, the people, have the power to make this life free and beautiful, to make this life a wonderful adventure." You're powerful.
