Chemistry Density Calculations Texas Chemistry Standards (TEKS) C.4.C The student is expected to compare solids, liquids, and gases in terms of compressibility, structure, shape, and volume. ***************************************************************************** Lesson Summary: This guided inquiry lesson enables students to construct their own understanding of the particle nature of solids, liquids, and gases. Students are able to actively learn the material without lecture or note taking. • First, students investigate five colorful cards illustrating the following properties of solids, liquids, and gases: particle arrangement and shape, volume, compressibility, attractive forces, particle movement and heat energy. The students then discuss and record their observations. • Second, students examine three capped syringes containing three different states of matter: a rock, colored water, and air. The students are asked to make two comparisons: 1) The syringe with the rock and the syringe with the water: Students are instructed to observe how the water flows and takes the shape of the syringe, while the rock is unable to flow and maintains its shape in the syringe. The students are then asked to use their understanding of the particle nature of matter to explain this observation. 2) The syringe with the rock and the syringe with the air: Students are instructed to try to compress the plungers of both syringes. They notice that they are able to easily compress the air, but not the rock. The students are then asked to use their understanding of the particle nature of matter to explain this observation. • Third, students are asked to predict and illustrate the probable particle arrangement in the rock, water, and air based on their understanding of the particle nature of matter and their observations of the physical properties of the three substances. • Fourth, students are provided with a student study sheet summarizing all of the important concepts and vocabulary in this lesson. ***************************************************************************** Learning Objectives (Bloom’s Revised Taxonomy): • Remembering: Identify similarities and differences in the particle arrangement and behavior of solids, liquids, and gases. • Understanding: Explain the following terms: chemistry, matter, particle, attractive force, compressibility, temperature. • Applying: Illustrate the particle arrangement of the following substances: rock, water, air. • Analyzing: Differentiate between solids, liquids, and gases by describing the following properties: particle arrangement, shape in a container, volume, compressibility, strength of attractive forces, particle movement, and particle energy. • Evaluating: Discuss how the behavior and arrangement of particles of matter relate to the observed properties of substances. • Creating: Predict the general particle arrangement of the following substances based on their observed properties: a rock, water, air. ***************************************************************************** Included in this Download: • Cover page (1 page) • Guided inquiry lesson (6 pages) • Five colorful cards illustrating the particle nature of solids, liquids, and gases.
