Detail of Grotesque Masque on Throne Chair

"Wonderfully imaginative" is the best way to describe this magnificently carved visage from one of the panels of grotesque decoration on throne chair 5212. The ears, mustaches, and beard are comprised of acanthus leaves while the tongue extends downwards and incorporates into the vase at the base of the panel.
