The castle is surrounded by a natural moat filled with lake water. Thus it belongs to the category of moated castles. The building is connected to the land by a bridge (there used to be a drawbridge in its place, the wooden rollers of which can still be seen today). Chillon has two different faces: the facade to the north, which is pierced by loopholes and crowned by machicolations, forms the castle. She guarded and watched over the street called Via Francigena.
