A large and eye-catching edition of The Self-Interpreting Bible, Containing the Old and New Testaments, by the Rev. John Brown inc. a critical memoir of the author. Published around the 1870's by James S. Virtue, London
Bound in a black coloured leather with diamond embossed pattern to boards, gilt border trim and gilt title to a ribbed spine. Full marbled end papers and page edges. Inscription to front fly page. Beautifully illustrated frontis and half title pages, as well as numerous other intricate black and white illustration plates throughout this antique Bible. Some internal wear with dampstain seeping through the text block, which has in the past not been allowed to dry properly. Staining and foxing present to pages. Some folded corners, chipping to edges. Original ribbon marker present but detached and worn.
Binding is holding well, a bit pulled at the spine but boards remain fully attached. Damage to joint of end paper, fly page which has caused an open tear to the inner corner. Bumping and turning to corners, chipping to leather corners and edges. Some staining and scratching to boards, small chips in places. Scratching and wear to marbled page edges, overall warping due to prior damp exposure.
This beautiful volume comes with some wear, but is a stunning example of Victorian craftsmanship and sure to make an interesting centrepiece to any collection
