Lining the backs of crocodilians, including alligators and caiman, are rows of scutes or osteoderms. They are bony plates with blood vessels surrounding them, and if a crocodilian is basking in the sunshine, those bony plates are absorbing heat. Crocodilians have a third eyelid called a nictitating membrane that allows them to see underwater, but they also have little sensory organs (that look like little black bumps on Maximo's face) called integumentary sensory organs, aka ISOs. These allow crocodilians to sense things in their watery, sometimes murky environments when they can't see anything at all. They can sense the movements of prey to ambush or of predators getting too close!

Crocodilians release bubbles from their nose to remain submerged underwater or as part of the mating ritual. Maximo was being a good boy and waiting for our photographer to get a beautiful shot of his smile underwater. Maximo's Backstory🐊
Maximo's Story: 🐊 Here we have Maximo with John, the Zoo Director, at Cairn's Crocodile Farm back in 2003. After losing Gomek, finding a strikingly large crocodile to join our Zoo proved to be quite the task. Maximo and his mate Sydney were flown from Australia to St Augustine, and have been together ever since.
